Happy Halloween!!!!

My little wooly mammoth and I wish you a very Happy Halloween!!!  In honor of our favorite holiday, I figured I’d share some of my go-to tips for enjoying a healthy and happy Halloween:

1.  Buy candy for your trick-or-treaters TODAY.  Buying last minute may or may not save you a little $, but it’ll definitely reduce the temptation of candy in your home.

2.  Eat well all day, but especially before heading out to trick-or-treat or to a Halloween party.  You don’t want to find yourself starving and digging into a bowl of Doritos or scarfing down your kids candy on the go!

3.  Go for “fun” size, but only if that works for you.  Most fun size treats are between 50-100 calories per package, but if you know you’ll still have 5 of them, you’re not doing yourself any favors.  In that case, stick to one regular size “special” treat (see my next tip!).

For reference, here are the calorie counts for some fun size candy:

-Reeses Peanut Butter Cup: 80
-M&Ms: 85
-Kit Kat: 75
-Starburst (2): 40
-Snickers: 75
-Skittles: 80

4.  Identify the treat you TRULY enjoy and savor it.  If you’re not a fan of nougat, don’t “waste” your treat on a Milky Way.  Make it special, choose the candy you might not let yourself eat too often, and ENJOY!

5.  Chew gum or suck on something like a ginger chew when handing out candy!  This will decrease temptation to pop some M&Ms  or twizzlers during the lagtime between trick-or-treaters!

And one bonus tip!  If you end up overindulging or consuming one too many sweet treats, don’t beat yourself up about it.  Feeling guilty is not going to change anything, so move on and get back on track to healthy eating!  Happy Halloween! 🙂

What are your favorite Halloween treats?  Do you go trick-or-treating?  Does your dog dress up!? Tell me about it!
